Now that we are finally in a position where Apple iPhones have finally moved to a USB Type C charging and connection port and ditched Lightning ports it can start to get a little uniformity across the board with its Android cousins.

Considering Apple has a reputation for releasing product updates every couple of years, it is somewhat surprising that we’re yet to be treated to the second generation of the hugely popular Apple AirPods Max.

The AirPods Max represented Apple’s first foray into the over-ear headphones market when they launched in 2020, having already taken the wireless earbud market by storm with the AirPods and AirPods Pro.

A sublime blend of reliable battery life, comfort, cinematic spatial audio, incredible sound quality and beautiful design made the Airpods Max the most popular headphones on the market. Even at the high-end price of £549.

However, in what is a little out of character for Apple, fans are still patiently waiting for the second generation Apple Airpods Max. Current rumors, though, suggest the wait may be over pretty soon.

When will Apple AirPods Max 2 arrive?

There are no concrete dates for when Apple fans can get their hands on the AirPods Max 2, but a few rumors are circulating that we might be able to expect a new Max edition in the latter stages of 2024.

That is according to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who claimed earlier this year that a new edition of the AirPods Max is likely to launch alongside a newer, more affordable version of earbuds, which he believes is due later in 2024.

Apple has a history of making us wait for AirPods Max releases, though. Before officially launching in December, it was expected they would debut a couple of months earlier alongside the launch of the iPhone 12. That didn’t happen due to “complications” and fans were made to wait a couple more months.

But a three-year wait for a fresh upgrade is unusual, which is fuelling rumors of an imminent announcement at some stage in 2024.

How will the Apple AirPods Max 2 look?

Whatever upgrades are in line for the Airpods Max 2, you can bet the overall design, look and feel will be sleek, comfortable and eye-catching. That’s what we’ve come to expect from Apple ever since the launch of the iMac G3 in 1998.

As we’re still relatively in the dark about the next edition of the Max, we’re having to rely on insider speculation to get a picture of what we might expect when they do eventually arrive.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has fueled many of the rumors in this area with several comments in an October 2023 newsletter, in which he also echoes the views of Kuo regarding a potential release date. He mostly hints at new colors and the introduction of USB-C charging.

The color range

Firstly, there’s the color range. The Airpods Max is available in Silver, Blue, Space Grey, Pink and Green. Gurman believes an “AirPods Max refresh with new colors” is on the horizon. That has fuelled rumors that the tech giant are considering introducing Yellow, Orange and Purple to the range, while it’s also being whispered that a Product (Red) edition. Some believe the new colors may be in sync with those of the upcoming iPhone 16, which is also expected to debut later this year.

USB charging

Elsewhere, the rumored introduction of USB-C charging is arguably the least surprising rumor of all. Apple announced the USB-C connections on the new iPhone 15 and charging cases for the Airpods Pro 2 in December 2023, so it’s a reasonable assumption to make that it will be present in all Apple products in the future.

Touch controls

Meanwhile, there is talk that Apple is making changes to the Max’s control mechanism, moving closer towards touch controls instead of continuing with the existing Digital Crown. This may come as music to the ears (pun intended) to current Max owners who find themselves knocking the Digital Crown when adjusting them.

The carry case

And finally, on to the carry case. While the AirPods Max’s design wowed fans, their protective case has come under some criticism. Particularly for not being very protective. Thankfully, a patent uncovered in the summer of 2022, appears to suggest Apple is working on a more substantial and durable case that utilizes a magnetic clasp.

This points towards an actual case, as opposed to what can only be described as a wrap-around cover we have today.

What are the Apple Airpods Max 2 specs?

The first edition AirPods Max arrived packed with top-of-the-range specifications and features, including active noise-cancellation (ANC), adaptive EQ, spatial audio with dynamic head-tracking and two H1 Apple chips.

That’s quite a lot to live up to and improve on in a second edition, but rumors point towards Apple working on making several significant improvements.

Firstly, there are improvements to ANC, with a recent AirPods Max patent referring to “audio howl” detection, with Apple looking to improve on ways to better mitigate unwanted feedback that is typically created by ANC microphones.

Elsewhere, there are whispers that Apple might be working on a way to deliver wireless lossless audio via better-than-Bluetooth audio transmission technology. If true and, of course, if it’s included in the Max, this will likely revolutionize the quality of portable wireless audio.

There is currently no noise surrounding what chip the Airpods Max 2 will use, but we can make a reasonable assumption that the H2 chip might be introduced to replace the H1 chips in the first edition Max. The H2 chip is already incorporated in the Airpods Pro 2. That said, there a no guarantees.

Other rumored features include the new “Find My” feature, which will allow owners to locate their headphones via the use of their iPhone, and a likely IPX rating, which means the Airpods Max 2 will be more suited to wetter conditions, such as rain, splashes and even sweat, for those that use their cans in the gym.

How much will Apple AirPods Max 2 cost?

Eyebrows were raised when the first-generation Airpods Max launched with a hefty £549 price tag, but it still didn’t stop people rushing to buy them. They sold out almost instantly, with the waiting list peaking at around 14 weeks.

There is nothing on the rumor mill to suggest Apple will launch the second-generation Max at a lower price point, so we should still expect to pay a top-of-the-range fee for what is going to be a top-of-the-range product.

Some fans have expressed wishes for a cheaper model to be released alongside the new Max to give fans the option depending on their budget, which Apple has previous with when it comes to their iPhone, Macbook, iPad and Apple Watch ranges.

However, that’s just people expressing their wishes as opposed to a credible rumor at this stage.

Apple has been working on its first foldable product for quite some time — but it won’t be an iPhone.This is according to Taiwanese supply chain sources, who told DigiTimes (via MacRumors) that this product has been in the works for quite some time. According to the outlet, the foldable Apple product is set to be a “larger device” than your run-of-the-mill iPhone, being closer in design to an iPad or a Macbook than a smartphone. 

These sources also claim that different design prototypes and ideas are converging, with mass production of the item reportedly being the next step. But what’s with the hold-up? Samsung released its first Galaxy folding phone back in 2019, meaning that even if we do get a foldable Apple device, it will be five years later than its main competitor.

Barriers to Apple’s development of foldable devices

Purportedly, the biggest barrier Apple is facing right now are the hinge mechanisms for foldable devices. The company is still trying to design a foldable design panel that meets its usual high standards in quality. And according to DigiTimes, rumors that Apple Vision Pro engineers have moved the foldable phones are true. But contrary to other rumors, the company has not put a pause on its work on foldable products. Instead, it is being claimed that Apple now has multiple departments dedicated to different foldable products.

But don’t expect to see them anytime soon — the report added that we won’t be seeing any of these devices launching before 2025. Still, we shouldn’t give up hope on the release of an Apple flip phone just yet. We know that Apple has, in the past, been granted a patent for a multi-layered flip phone for a crack-resistant protective screen layer structure not just for smartphones, but for other foldable devices like tablets and laptops.

Sony’s PlayStation typically dominates in virtually every realm when it comes to gaming success, but now Microsoft’s Xbox is fighting back.

For the first time, the Xbox franchise is expected to overtake PlayStation when it comes to gaming revenue, as revealed by a detailed report by analysis firm Newzoo. This comes after Microsoft acquired Activision in a $68.7 billion deal, meaning it’s now the owner of huge games like Call of Duty, World of Warcraft, and Diablo. As such, Activision’s revenue for the second half of the year now counts towards Microsoft’s, edging them ahead of Sony for the first time on record.

If the delay to the deal had not happened, however, Microsoft would have moved ahead of Sony even earlier. From January through June, Microsoft and Activision’s combined gaming revenue was $10.4 billion, far more than Sony’s $8 billion. Looking ahead, Activision is moving from strength to strength, experiencing 35.5% year-on-year growth, the highest rate for any of the top ten gaming companies in Newzoo’s report.

The world’s biggest video gaming companies

In top place, Chinese tech giant Tencent holds strong by a long way, largely due to investments in companies like Epic Games, a strong presence in China, mobile gaming titles, and ownership of League of Legends’ Riot.

Newzoo also predicts that the games industry will generate $184 billion in revenue for the entirety of the 2023 financial year, forecasting a growth of $205.7 billion by 2026. While PlayStation and Microsoft tend to stick to console and PC gaming respectively, the biggest stake in gaming software revenue remains in mobile, thereby giving Tencent its massive lead ahead of the pair.

Although PC and console did see some growth in 2023, browser-based games continue to plummet. Mobile gaming holds strong, taking 49% of overall gaming revenue, with console and PC trailing with 29% and 21% stakes respectively.

Microsoft does have a foot in the door with mobile gaming as well, owning some heavy hitter titles like Candy Crush and successful studios like Bethesda Game Studios and ZeniMax Online Studios, which could contribute to still more future growth in comparison to Sony down the line.

Meanwhile, in a move that has enraged customers and emboldened advocates of digital piracy, PlayStation sent out emails to players informing them that some digital content they have purchased – and therefore thought they actually owned – will be removed from their libraries from the end of the year.

OpenAI, the company behind the hugely popular AI chatbot,  introduced voice chats on ChatGPT for Android and iOS in September, but initially only for its Plus and Enterprise subscribers. Now, co-founder Greg Brockman has revealed the feature is rolling out to all free users on mobile.

How will ChatGPT voice chat work on the mobile app?

Now, with ChatGPT’s voice chat right in your mobile app, you can dive right into dynamic, spoken dialogues with the chatbot just by hitting the little voice symbol. Your spoken words will be interpreted by the large language model, and you’ll receive a response that eerily mirrors human speech, taking your conversation to a whole new realm of authenticity.

Powered by a text-to-speech model, it generates “human-like audio” and offers five different voices. Despite the wide release announcement, universal access may take time. It’s still unclear if users need to opt in, but paid subscribers can enable it in Settings.

OpenAI claim ChatGPT’s voice chat not only enhances user experience but also caters to a variety of preferences, offering a rich, multimodal experience that goes hand-in-hand with classic text-based interactions. It has the potential to offer a whole new level of engaging and accessible communication.

A hectic week for OpenAI

The $80 billion valued company is going through a chaotic period.

Brockman announced the latest ChatGPT release after resigning as OpenAI’s President, stemming from CEO Sam Altman’s sudden departure on November, 17. The move led to protests and threats of mass resignations from employees. Less than five days later and Altman was back as the CEO. Furthermore, a restructured leadership team was announced, featuring the former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and the ex- US Treasury Secretary Larry Summers.

OpenAI has been making significant strides in its field, pioneering progress in areas like reinforcement learning and natural language processing. It’s one of the companies leading the charge into the AI revolution.

But they’re not without critics. The world’s richest man, Elon Musk has called attention to some of the company’s more questionable decisions.

Musk, who recently launched his own chatbot AI Grok, has publicly challenged former board members. In response to Altman’s firing, the billionaire asked OpenAI’s co-founder and board member, Ilya Sutskevar:  “Why did you take such a drastic action? If OpenAI is doing something potentially dangerous to humanity, the world needs to know.”

On Oct 12, 2022, Valve launched an updated version of its popular handheld gaming PC, the Steam Deck, with an improved OLED screen, longer battery life, and other enhancements over the original.

According to a recent PC Gamer report, many were worried that Valve would face similar inventory shortages with the OLED model as it did when the original Steam Deck launched in February 2022. However, Valve seems to have prepared adequately for the OLED launch day this time around.

When the original Steam Deck became available for preorder, stock sold out within hours. New orders were placed on an extensive reservation list, with customers waiting months to receive their devices. Valve underestimated the demand, resulting in frustrating delays for eager customers.

Fortunately, that has not been the case with the Steam Deck OLED. The estimated delivery dates for the new $549 and $649 models still show only a 3-5 business day wait. The availability suggests Valve stockpiled units ahead of launch to meet demand. The cheaper $399 original Steam Deck is still readily available for fast delivery.

Valve spokesperson Jay Shaw said the company hoped to avoid the previous supply issues. “We’re confidently hoping that everything holds up well and people aren’t slipping into reservations for months and months out,” Shaw told the media earlier this month.

That preparation seems to have paid off on launch day. Apart from minor hiccups with payment processing and an OLED delay in Taiwan, most buyers have reported a smooth purchasing experience with quick delivery estimates.

Valve still advises they are not ready to announce a full sequel to the Steam Deck yet. For now, the OLED model provides the best Steam Deck experience available with its gorgeous display and refined design.

Major suppliers to Apple in Taiwan recorded another substantial sales decline in September, falling 16.4% year-over-year to NT$1.24 trillion ($38.7 billion). The drop comes despite the launch of Apple’s latest iPhone models and new Android devices from competitors and follows similar data from the PC market.

According to an Oct. 12 Bloomberg report, the sales decline extends a downward trend that began in 2022 for Taiwan’s contract chipmakers and electronics assemblers that supply Apple and other tech giants. The September figures mark the steepest monthly drop since June. For the first nine months of 2023, sales have fallen 8.8% compared to the same period last year.

The new iPhone 15 lineup went on sale in September, with upgrades to the base model receiving positive reviews. However, the iPhone launch did little to boost suppliers’ sales. This highlights the smartphone market’s maturity and Apple’s challenges in spurring demand for new models.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, the world’s largest contract chipmaker, recorded a 13.4% sales decline in September. This was better than many analysts feared, reflecting TSMC’s strength in non-smartphone segments like high-performance computing chips.

Device assemblers like Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn) and Compal Electronics posted double-digit percentage declines in September. Quanta Computer, another major Apple contract manufacturer, also saw significant decreases — revealing challenges faced across Apple’s Taiwan-based assembly ecosystem.

The sales downturn reflects both softening consumer demand for personal electronics like smartphones and market saturation in developed countries. The next catalyst for growth in the smartphone market is unclear, as new features like foldable displays have yet to go mainstream.

Going forward, Apple and its suppliers must target growth avenues outside smartphones and PCs, including new product categories like AR/VR headsets. Software and services have become increasingly vital to Apple’s results as hardware sales moderate — but, in the near term, Taiwan suppliers face more uncertainty and potential downside amid a sluggish global economy and weak electronics demand.

Although Apple and Meta have yet to release their first consumer virtual reality headsets, the tech giants are already working on the subsequent iterations.

According to an Oct. 8 Bloomberg report, Apple’s first headset, the Vision Pro, will likely launch in early 2023. The Vision Pro features high-resolution cameras that enable mixed reality, a powerful Apple-designed M2 chip, and crisp micro-OLED displays.

However, the current Vision Pro prototype is large and heavy, and testers have reported neck strain from wearing the device for prolonged periods.

For the next version, Apple engineers want to reduce the headset’s weight and size to improve comfort. One option under consideration is an over-the-head strap to better distribute the weight. However, designing lighter hardware components may be the best long-term solution. Apple also aims to simplify prescription lens integration for glasses wearers.

Meta prepping Quest 3 release

Meanwhile, Meta is preparing to release its Quest 3 headset next week at a starting price of $500. The Quest 3 offers upgrades like faster performance and a refined design compared to the prior model — but at $200 more than the Quest 2, Meta wants to lower costs on future versions to expand mainstream appeal.

One strategy is to launch a new entry-level headset without controllers, allowing hand gestures to control the interface. This would lower the production cost, with some rumors suggesting a price under $200 — albeit at the expense of functionality. Meta also plans a high-end replacement for the failed $1,500 Quest Pro.

Though confidence is high at Apple, Meta sees the Vision Pro as a potential game-changer in making virtual reality mainstream. One Meta employee compared the anticipation to how the mobile industry awaited the original iPhone reveal:

“We’re in the ‘afraid of Apple’ stage.”

Both companies continue to have long-term ambitions in augmented reality devices. Apple paused its AR glasses project last year due to immature technology — but it may restart development to fulfill CEO Tim Cook’s vision of sleek and discrete AR spectacles. Meta remains committed to eventual AR spectacles and is already testing display components.
